Ice Plant

The plant Carpobrotus chilensis is an invasive species that can be found in large abundance lining the slough next to my school. As president of Chemistry Club I lead a project involving finding a chemical/medicinal use for them to encourage their over-harvesting and removal.

Ice plant (Carpobrotus chilensis) was collected from around the Redwood Shores Slough.
The samples were dehydrated and powdered
Alchohol was used to extract chemicals which were then purified through distillation.
Further theoretical research was conducted on potential uses for the extracts
The extracts were incorperated into a skin cream as a proof of concept.
